No Workplace Benefits? How to Compare Health & Dental Insurance in Ontario
Health and dental insurance can help Ontario residents without workplace benefits manage eligible prescription, dental, vision and other healthcare expenses. This guide explains what to compare before choosing a plan.
Whether you are self-employed, between jobs, retired, or have never had a group plan, begin with your own needs rather than the name of a package.
Three Routes to Discuss
These are planning routes, not three identical product categories. Coverage after workplace benefits end may itself offer guaranteed acceptance.
| Route | What to understand | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Medically underwritten coverage | Medical questions are part of the application. Approval and coverage depend on the insurer's assessment; existing conditions may not be covered. | How will my medical history and existing prescriptions affect the offer? |
| Guaranteed-acceptance options | Some plans allow acceptance without medical questions, subject to eligibility and payment requirements. Acceptance does not mean every expense is covered. | Are my current medications eligible, and what limits and exclusions apply? |
| Coverage after other benefits end | Some plans are designed for people losing existing coverage. Application deadlines and prior-coverage requirements vary. | Do I qualify based on my former plan, and what is my exact deadline? |
Examples of these distinctions appear in the insurer sources below. Read the actual policy wording and personalized offer before choosing coverage.
If You Take Medication, Check the Details First
Prepare a list of your medications and ask whether each is eligible. Review the annual drug maximum, reimbursement percentage, deductible, and rules for generic or brand-name medication.
Manulife identifies certain guaranteed-acceptance plans as covering eligible existing conditions and current medications, while distinguishing them from its other health and dental plans. This is why you should compare the specific product, rather than assume every plan from one insurer works the same way.
Recently Lost Benefits? Check the Deadline
Do not assume there is one deadline for every insurer. For example, Manulife states that FollowMe applicants must apply and pay the first premium within 90 days of group benefits ending. Canada Life identifies a 60-day window after leaving another plan for its Freedom to Choose Guaranteed plans. Other eligibility conditions apply.
If you have never had workplace benefits, ask about options that do not require recent prior coverage.
Compare What You Receive, Not Just What You Pay
- Dental: Which services qualify? Check routine care, major work, reimbursement percentages, annual limits, recall frequency, and waiting periods.
- Vision: What is the allowance, and how often does it reset?
- Paramedical care: Are limits separate for each practitioner or shared across services?
- Travel: If included, review trip duration, eligibility, exclusions, and pre-existing-condition requirements.
- Ongoing affordability: Consider the annual premium alongside likely eligible claims and protection against less predictable costs.
Your Coverage-Review Preparation Checklist
Bring the following to your review:
- Your age, province, and who needs coverage.
- Medication names and approximate recurring costs.
- Dental priorities and any treatment estimate you already have.
- Your preferred monthly budget.
- Details of existing coverage, including a spouse's plan, if relevant.
- Your previous coverage end date and plan information, if applicable.
Keep detailed medical information for the appropriate insurer application or secure review process.
Common Questions
Does guaranteed acceptance mean unlimited coverage?
No. Eligibility, covered expenses, reimbursement rates, limits, and exclusions still matter. Review what the policy pays for, not just how you are accepted.
Is the lowest premium always the best choice?
Compare the premium with the benefits that matter to you. A lower-priced plan may leave more of your expected expenses out of pocket; a higher-priced plan may include benefits you rarely use.
Can I get a useful comparison without choosing a plan first?
Yes. Begin with your needs, budget, medications, and coverage history. Those details help guide the comparison.
