Your suggested next step
From Information to Action
- Review your assumptions. Adjust rates, costs, and timelines to explore another scenario.
- Save your summary. Keep a copy of the inputs, estimate, and limitations.
- Discuss your next step with GMFSI. Bring your summary to the conversation.
Both print options can be saved as PDF. Summary includes your inputs and key assumptions; Full Report includes all assumptions and limitations. Browser-menu printing uses the full report by default.
Canadian taxes, CPP/OAS entitlements, RESP grants, and registered-account limits are not automatically calculated.

A guide to your next step
How to Use Your Financial Planning Toolkit
You do not need to work through every financial question at once. Start with the question that matters most, explore an estimate and use it to identify what deserves a closer look.
Choose a question
Select a life stage or planning focus. Choose “Explore every topic” to see all 12 questions.
Enter your figures
Replace the sample values. Check your currency, timeline, costs and any rates used.
Review the estimate
Select “See my estimate,” then read the result alongside its assumptions and limitations.
Save your next step
Download or print your summary and note the questions you would like to discuss.
What can you explore?
- Retirement: Explore savings readiness, potential monthly income and how long savings might last under the assumptions entered.
- Personal savings: Estimate monthly contributions toward a future goal.
- Debt repayment: Explore a repayment timeline and estimated interest for one fixed-rate debt.
- Emergency savings: Calculate the gap between available savings and your selected expense buffer.
- Family protection: Explore a simplified life insurance funding gap.
- Education savings: Estimate monthly saving toward a future education budget.
- Business planning: Examine cash reserves, key person protection, partner buyout funding and the share of personal net worth tied to a business.
Life-stage categories are starting points. You can switch between them or explore every topic as your priorities change.
An example: a four-month emergency buffer
Suppose your household’s essential expenses are CAD $3,000 per month, and you choose to explore four months of coverage.
| Essential monthly expenses | $3,000 |
|---|---|
| Selected coverage period | 4 months |
| Selected emergency savings target | $12,000 |
| Available emergency savings | $4,000 |
| Remaining savings gap | $8,000 |
| Monthly additions | $500 |
| Estimated time to close the gap | 16 months |
This assumes fixed expenses and monthly saving, with no interest, inflation or withdrawals. Four months is an example, not a recommended buffer for every household. Your preferred buffer may differ with income stability, family responsibilities and other available resources.
Understand the assumptions behind the number
A result reflects the figures you enter and the way the calculator models them. Open the “Assumptions & Limitations” panel beside your result to review:
- User-entered assumptions: Your figures, selected currency, rates and timeline, including any sample values you retained.
- Fixed model assumptions: How contributions, payments, withdrawals and other calculations are handled.
- Excluded factors: Important considerations that are not included in the estimate.
Investment projections use constant returns. Actual markets fluctuate, and the order of gains and losses can affect retirement withdrawals. Retirement income estimates are simplified drawdown calculations, not guaranteed income or a determination of a safe withdrawal rate.
Canadian taxes, CPP and OAS entitlements, RESP grants, and registered-account limits are not automatically calculated. Other income is included only where you explicitly enter it in an applicable field.
Currency selection changes labels only; it does not convert amounts. Insurance estimates illustrate possible funding gaps and do not determine suitable coverage, policy eligibility or premiums.
Change one assumption and explore again
Try a different monthly saving amount, a later goal date or a lower assumed investment return. Recalculate and consider how the estimate changes.
Changing one input at a time can help you understand what influences the modeled outcome. Keep assumptions realistic for the scenario you want to explore. Sample values are examples, not recommendations or forecasts.
When you change an input, your earlier estimate is marked as outdated. Recalculate before saving or printing the updated result.
Save your estimate for a planning conversation
Use Download text summary to keep a text copy, or choose Print Summary or Print Full Report. Your browser’s print dialog can save the report as a PDF.
The summary includes inputs and key assumptions; the full report includes the complete assumptions and limitations. Save the version that gives you the detail you need.
Before a conversation, note:
- Which assumptions you would like help reviewing.
- What existing insurance, income, savings or commitments should be considered.
- Which goal or potential gap feels most pressing.
From Information to Action
Connect your estimate with your circumstances.
An estimate can help you frame a question. A personal review can help connect that question with your cash flow, existing insurance, investments, retirement income and competing priorities.
Bring your summary and your questions. Together, we can consider a practical next step.
